Anti-Colonial Astrology:
Theoretical and Thematic Approaches to Decolonizing Astrological Practice
Our modern globalized experience has been deeply shaped by colonization, overt and covert, in countries in both the global north and south. As we experience a world ravaged by capitalism and climate collapse, our direct engagement with our own colonial mentalities has become ever more pertinent. Various astrologies, emergent across world cultures, are not immune to colonization and the colonial mindset. It is up to practitioners, authors and educators to dismantle colonial structures, including white racial hierarchy, within our astrological practices.
Many astrological practitioners are already infusing decolonial and anticolonial work in their practices, some without consciously naming it, through incorporating indigenous cosmologies, in deconstructing the capitalistic frameworks they work under, and by offering space for multiple perspectives and ideas.
We invite astrological practitioners and thinkers to examine the colonial structures within their own astrological practice and the industry/community as a whole, in either theoretical or thematic ways. This is not meant to be overly dense, we welcome academic-level research papers and forms of writing such as poem, screenplay, or oral history that offer an anti-colonial lens on astrology.
With this volume, we aim to render the discipline of astrology in new ways through a critical analysis of modern perspectives and practices. By identifying biases and tracing the nuances of our practices, we can offer a cynosure for the community at large to do the same.
This volume will be edited by Samira Bechara of Critical Astrology and Dr. Jenn Zahrt, and published by Revelore Press.
